Chapter IV

Twenty-Two Miles under the Earth's Crust

July 22nd, 1919:

Eleven days after first entering the volcano, our trio discovers what lies beyond the crystals, in the humid conditions...

Ms. Rommel: "Why, look at all these flowers! Aren't the beautiful?"

Professor Beckett: "Indeed. All of these plants must be able to survive because of the humidity down here. If I had to guess, I'd say that this forest will get denser as we go deeper and deeper. And look at those mushrooms! I've never seen anything like them in my life! Dr. Omaha? Do you think any of these plants could be used medicinally?"

Dr. Omaha: "I'm sure they could be. I'll go and gather what I can find. Who knows? Anyone of these plants could be the missing link to finding cures for hundreds of illnesses!"

Ms. Rommel: "Ewwwwww! Look at these spiders! Why on Earth are they glowing like that!?"

Professor Beckett: "It's quite simple. Just like fireflies, they must have specific enzymes in their organs that allows them to emite light."

Ms. Rommel: "Bugs, and enzymes and stuff aside, I think I'll go pick some flowers. Smell them! How lovely and sweet!"

Professor Beckett: "Miss Rommel! Wait, behind you!"

Ms. Rommel: "What on Earth are you talking about?

Owwwww! Professor! I thought you didn't like me like that!

*shriek* You're not the professor!"

Creature: "MMMMMUUUUAAAHHHHH!"

Ms. Rommel: "Ppppffff! Yuck!"

Dr. Omaha: "Hey Ms. Rommel, I think your friend there likes you!"

Ms. Rommel: "Well...as much as I hate to say it, he is kind of cute.

Can I take him along?"

Professor Beckett: "Of course you can not! We have no idea what that thing is! Why, it could have acid for saliva for all we know!"

Ms. Rommel: "Well my mouth hasn't burned off yet. I thought you of all people would want to study him and learn!"

Professor Beckett: "*sigh* I am a sucker for unknown species. Alright, you can take him, but he's your responsibility. I would suggest we continue our trek by foot now. It'll be easier for all of us."

Dr. Omaha: "Goodness, it is quite humid down here."

Professor Beckett: "We must be getting closer..."
